Evaluation

Evaluation Digital Image

Overall I really enjoyed this whole process of learning different skills in photography and even just learning the basics I really enjoyable because now I feel confident enough to do a makeup look and know I can take an image of it without my photography skills letting it down because if you take the image from a angle which isn’t flattering it ruins the makeup because your not taking it right. I am extremely happy with my final outcomes because I think I managed to achieve the style and mood I wanted for my images by using the right lighting and postproduction correctly.
I think the thing I struggled with most in setting up on my own in the studio because when your in class Chris was there to ask for help if you got something simple wrong but made a big difference. I think I struggled with this the most because in the shoot I seemed to waste a lot of time setting up and trying to get the perfect lighting ect.
Next time I will defiantly ask a lot more questions in class and make sure I note them all down because I think if I had the notes from class I would have been more confident setting up because I could go back to them and remember what Chris said in the lesson.
The parts that helped me a lot was the planning of the shoot, I think if I didn’t plan my shoots as well as I did I would have struggled with ideas while shooting but I made sure I always had ideas of different poses for my model and also what type of style I was going for, making the magazine mood board that I did really helped me reflect back on while in the shoot to make sure I wasn’t going off track and focused on my initial idea.

Over all I was extremely happy with my final outcomes, I am a lot more confident with using a camera in the correct way and how to create the perfect beauty image.

Photoshop final images

These are my final edited images which I have put in indesign to create the 3 picture collage. I am extremely happy with the final outcome because I was slightly worried that I wouldn't be able to create the slightly edgy look I wanted to create with these images but I managed to do this using the right lighting and change of contrast in photoshop.
In photoshop I changed the brightness slightly and the contrast to create the perfect base by adjusting this. This helped me active the images I wanted.
I also used the clone tool to get rid of some blemishes  I also used the burn and dodge tool to brighten eyes slightly and darken brows and eye lashes.
I then used the sharpen tool on the eye brows to make them stand out a little bit more.
I was really impressed with the final outcome as I have never used photoshop much before and I think by just doing a few simple adjustments I achieved the images I wanted.

Outcome of second shoot

Outcome of second shoot - Black and White

These images are the 3 images i have chosen from my second shoot which will be turned into my black and white images.
In these images i have used a soft box lighting system which have be a bright image but also have me some contrasting shadows which i hope to bring out in photo shop to create more of an edgy image as thats what my shoot was based on.
In the shoot i found it quite difficult to create the image i exacly wanted becuase every time i turned the light up or down it didnt create shadowed just made the models skin look bad or it would make the image not look like a beauty image becuase it would look too dark. I really struggled with this at the beginging so i decided to go for the level of lighting where it looked bright enough to be a beauty image and then can change the contrast of this in photoshop i thought this was a better idea than doing it the other way round in photoshop.
The last image of the model side of i will be cropping as i got a bit of the background in this image as i didnt shoot it portrait.

Planning second shoot

Planning Second Shoot - Black & White

When planning my second shoot which are going to be my black and white images I flicked through some magazines including Vogue and Dazed and confused. These showed some more wintery image which were in black and white and gave off quite a cold and edgy look to the image.
I am going to try and create this look by creating shadows on the face by using the light slightly above the models face and directed from different angles to create beautiful highlights on the face and shadows under the cheek bones and jaw.

Im planning on using a beetie dish which will hopefully create the shadows and look that I want. I feel like using this is more of a risky lighting system that the rest because in class when practising sometimes it worked with some people and other times it didn't because of the face shape or skin type. So if this doesn't work then I will be using a soft box but using it with the light quite bright.

I also want my model to look very natural because I think this is a great look when using this type of set up and mood.
Planning on my model to have curly bed hair look, minimal makeup look so will just be using the bace on the face, fill the eyebrows in slightly and mascara.
I didn't want to over do it with the makeup because some people suit it and some don't and my model has such a natural look that she doesn't need to put loads on.

Out come of first Shoot

Outcome to first shoot...
On the left i have the three images i have chosen from the shoot to use as my final colour images. I will be editing them only slightly to make them slighly more contrasted and brighten it up slightly.

The shoot as a whole went really well and really enjoyed experimenting with the lighting in the shoot becuase to start with the shoot wasnt going too well becuase the lighting that i chose which was a beetie dish wasnt working at all, it made the images look really over exposed and ruined the image in a way becuase even went i turned it down it made my models skin look worse. So i decided to change from this lighting to using a soft box which worked a lot better and gave me the oucome i was looking for.
Over all these images came out exacly how i wanted them too and really happy using these as my final images.

Planning of the first shoot colour

Planning my first shoot - Colour Images

After creating a visual mood board from looking though magazines I have got an idea of the kind of style and mood I will be going for with my images.

I want the images to look slightly seductive by just having a suggestion with using a jumper off the shoulder because this is what we learnt in Kat's lesson about how female models are used to sell stuff by being suggestive for example having the hands round the mouth , etc. So I think im also going to use this type of pose in my images.
I also really want to capture more of a lazy, bed head style because I think this looks the most natural because the brief does say the perfect base and my model doesn't need to wear a lot of makeup and have her hair straightened or curled.
I will be using brows and golds around the eyes to create a warm glowing look.

In this shoot I will be using soft box lighting to create soft shadows on the face and back.

Digital Mood Board

Digital mood board
We started to create digital mood boards on photoshop to show our initial ideas and what we want to base our final images on.
This was a chance for us to look online and see what images we really liked and then think about how the images were lit, what kind of makeup was used, what was the main focus point in these images, how did they make the main focal point obviouse.
This really helped me to plan my shoots and what equitment i would be needing and also the way i would be styling my model.

Magazine mood board

Magazine Mood Board

In my visual mood board which I have created I have got the colour scheme and style that I would like my images and shoots to be based on.
In the images below it shows an analogous colour theme throughout, showing a different variety of browns. I really like this look because I think it look really natural and creates the perfect base for my model. The model I have set up for these shoot is very natural looking anyway and doesn't need to lot of makeup to look good so I thought about just using browns and no harsh bright colours.

I will also be using a soft box and a beetie dish lighting system to create these types of looks because I love the soft shadows on these women faces as I really think it creates more of a feminine image as you can see the bone structure.
I will also be Un my models hair and clothing which will be very causal wear maybe a Un buttoned shirt or baggy jumper to create these bed head style images.
I would also like the eyes to be the main focal point in my images, I will do this by using the rule of thirds in my work because if you have the main focal point in certain parts of the image it will attract the audience to it which in my images will be the eyes.

Practising..

Practising with light..

In class today we experimented more with lighting and how the position of the light and how bright it is can change an image completely.

In this first image it is comparing an image which has been way over exposed to an image which has got the right amount of lighting. In these images you cant see them perfectly but it shows a rough outline of what we were trying to do.
We also used the soft box lighting on quite a high power and above the models head. This creates a lovely bright image which you can see in the example. This would be good to use this technique if you wanted a really bright, illuminated final beauty shot.

Practise Makes Perfect

Experimenting with different lighting..

In these images we started to experiment with lighting and what didn't work for an image and also how different lighting suits different models.
In this first image we were trying to create a shadow on the left side by using a beetie dish to create this harsh shadow but it didn't really work the way we all thought it would.
It's slightly over exposed and also not very flattering on the skin because it shows up all the imperfections.
We then tried to turn down the light which helped slightly more because it gave more of a 3d style to the image because it wasn't too over exposed but it still didn't really work with the model. I still think the second image is still quite edgy and gives off that slightly different shadowed look.
We then tried it front on and I think this worked quite well but still doesn't look like a beauty image because the lighting still wasn't perfect, I think we also should have had the light slightly higher to give more of a flattering image.
In the last image we tried using a soft box lighting to really highlight the image and the face. This lighting did work to do that but also didn't give any depth to the image made it look quite flat.
I think maybe if we turned up the brightness and maybe placed the light to one side or above the model it would have created more of a 3d image.

Practising with lighting

Practising with Lighting

In our lesson today we started to play around with different lighting set ups and the effect the lighting has on the image.
For beauty shots you often need the light quite bright and hitting the face at the right height and angle to make a flattering beauty shot.

In this lesson we used a soft box lighting system to create a soft but bright image, using a soft box would get rid of harsh shadows on the face but at the same time create beautiful soft shadows under the cheek bones. In the images below I think the lighting worked really well to capture a mood and warmth to the image. The eyes also really stand out in this image because the light is hitting the eye makes the colour stand out.

Advertisng the perfect woman?

Advertisng the perfect woman?

Women all around the world are under a lot of pressure to try and make them selves look perfect 24/7 because of magazines and advertisements, which show women what they are supposed to look like. You cant go a day without seeing a made up model which has been photo shopped to the max. They are shown on magazines, billboards, TV adverts and the biggest of all are all over social media like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Celebrities uploading images of them self’s looking perfect all the time but what everyone doesn’t know is that they edit everything that is seen by the public.

So is this right?

Is it okay for advertising companies to portray women in this way?

In reality there is very few people that look perfect in person. This means advertising companies give out the wrong view on perfection for the younger generation.

In class we also looked at models compared to normal women, this was really interesting because it was normal everyday women posing and copying exactly what the model in the advert was doing. This shows how different models are to normal women and what photoshop can do to image is crazy.
